COLLECTION METADATA FOR THE ESSW AVHRR COLLECTION

Title Earth System Science Workbench: AVHRR Level 1b Data.

Short title ESSW AVHRR.

Responsible party Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, University of California at Santa Barbara.

Scope and purpose The Institute for Computational Earth System Science (ICESS) operates a SeaSpace TeraScan ground station that automatically receives and processes HRPT telemetry from the AVHRR sensors on board the NOAA polar-orbiting satellites. We've programmed the TeraScan system to acquire any AVHRR imagery transmitted by the NOAA-12 and NOAA-14 satellites, whenever they're at least 20 degrees above the horizon at UCSB. The imagery is stored as a level 1b (radiometrically calibrated) TDF (TeraScan Data Format). The visible and Near IR channels are albedos, while the IR channels are brightness temperatures. This collection can also be accessed through the Earth System Science Workbench.
