Funding for the development of the Alexandria Digital Library middleware and the ADEPT Virtual Learning Environment, under the NSF DLI2 initiative, has now ended. Future support for enhancement and dissemination of the operational library infrastructure will be provided by the Davidson Library UCSB. ADL technology will be the starting point for designing a distributed geospatial library network funded by the Library of Congress Digital Preservation Initiative. However, the educational evaluation component of the DLI2 project continues into 2005, and further work on the ADEPT software and its broader deployment are under way via a joint U.S. (NSF) and U.K. (JISC) funded project: DialogPlus - Digital Libraries in Support of Innovative Approaches to Learning and Teaching in Geography.
The Concept System creates concepts and relationships between concepts in a knowlege base, and displays the concepts graphically. It is made up of the following components:
The Concept Controller lets you search for specific concepts, start the concept editing, viewing or creation process, and build relationships.
The Concept Viewer displays the concepts from the Concept Database.
The Concept Editor lets you create, edit, and delete concepts.
The Concept Relationship Builder is new to this version of the ADEPT Concept System. It allows relationships between concepts to be constructed. Relationships are built in the forward direction by the user, and the reverse direction is created by the system automatically.

Browser Requirements
- Use the latest browser: To edit concepts you will need Internet Explorer 6.0+ on the Windows platform only. To view concepts you will need the latest version of Internet Explorer 6.0+, Netscape 7.0+ or Mozilla 1.1+ on Windows, Linux or Unix. No other browsers are supported. No support or testing has been done with the Mac platform, however Netscape 7 is recommended.
- If you are using Mozilla or Netscape, download the correct math fonts for MathML support (see http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/). Install them as instructed and reboot if necessary.
- If you are using Internet Explorer, download the MathML plugin (see http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathplayer/welcome.asp). Install as instructed.
- If you are using Internet Explorer, download the SVG plugin (see http://www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/main.html ). Install as instructed. SVG is not available on Netscape 7 or Mozilla 1.1 at this time.
