Using the Concept Relationship Builder

The Concept Relationship Builder is divided into two main sections.  The left side lets you search for existing concepts; the right side lets you construct relationships.

Relating to an Existing Concept: On the left side, run a search for the concept you wish to relate to.  On the right, make sure there is an empty text box set under Existing Concepts.  If there is not, add one using the + button.  Click the concept on the left to which you wish to relate this concept.  Set the type of relationship.

Setting Relationship Types

There are two basic types of relationships: Is A and Part Of.  Both types of relationships have a forward and reverse direction.

IS A: Is A: Forward relationship. A Potato 'is a' Plant, where Plant is the parent.

IS A: Contains: Reverse relationship: A Plant 'contains' Potato, where Plant is the parent.

Part Of: Part Of: Forward relationship: A Arm is 'part of' a Human, where Human is the parent.

Part Of: Contains: Reverse relationship: A Human 'contains'  an Arm, where Human is the parent.

Relating to New (It does not exist yet) Concept: On the right side, press + button under New Concepts.  Fill in the name of the new Concept and set the relationship type.  The Concept will be created and automatically related to this Concept.

Removing unwanted Relationships: Click the X button next to the relationship you wish to remove.  If the relationship has already been saved, it will be removed once the page is saved.  You can undo and deletion by pressing the ^ button of the Concept relationship you wish to undelete.

Saving: Press the Create & Update Relationships button.  The relationships are saved and the inverse relationships are created automatically.  Any new concepts are created and auto-related.

Note: Reverse relationships are created automatically.  Do not define the same relationship in both directions.

Errors

When searching for existing concepts, a JavaScript Error may occur.  This is most likely due to a ' or a " in the actual name of the concept.  Apostrophes are not recommended in Concept Primary Names.  Click 'Ignore' and continue.  They will not effect using the Relationship Builder.

When undeleting an existing concept, the relationship type is lost.  This does not always occur, if it does, reset the relationship type using the pulldown menu.
