IMAGE PROCESSING TEAM

Membership: B. Manjunath (leader), Y. Ma, S. Mitra, N. Stroebel, Y. Wang

Mission Statement of Team: The goal of the Image Processing Team is to investigate issues concerning the representation, storage, and access of image-related data. The Team also aids the implementation team in adapting their research findings and recommendations for the testbed system. Particular foci of activity for the Team are wavelet decompositions for storage, manipulation and transmission of images, and access of images by content.

The image processing team has continued its focus on an integrated approach to image storage, browsing, and retrieval. Three important research contributions during this period include

  1. the development of a new integer wavelet transform, the BR transform, for both lossless and lossy compression;
  2. a new image segmentation algorithm which utilizes texture and color information;
  3. an incremental eigenspace updating algorithm with potential applications to database search.
During this review period the team has published (or had accepted for publication) four journal papers and 5 conference papers.

Activities related to testbed development include development of a JAVA based applet for client side progressive reconstruction of higher resolution images on demand and integration of texture features for image retrieval.
