We believe that an important function for digital libraries in university environments is to support access to many forms of scientific data. We are therefore currently exploring the idea of building a collection scientific datasets that would be available online from ADL. To this end, we have formed two working groups that will, respectively, determine (1) a metadata model for scientific datasets and (2) suitable collections to load into ADL. These working groups have representatives from the following groups: ADL, Institute for Crustal Studies (UCSB), National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (UCSB), San Diego Supercomputer Center, and the School for Environmental Science and Management (UCSB). With respect to metadata, it is hoped to agree upon a simple (FGDC-like) content model that can be used in the very near future to catalog scientific datasets. The groups forming the working groups would also be responsible for identifying suitable datasets to load into ADL.
