In Boulder, Barbara Buttenfield and Suzanne Larsen arranged with the local ESRI office to donate copies of ArcVoyager (a front-end GIS interface designed for high school classrooms) to the library and the geography department. In the geography department, two graduate students (John Schneider and Terry McManus) volunteered to intern at the Boulder High School to teach GIS and Internet data delivery concepts using ArcVoyager, and to assist their Boulder High School supervisor (Steve Wanner) in developing curriculum modules utilizing GIS and digital library technology. They trained on Arc Voyager throughout the late fall, and began their internships in January 1997. Barbara Buttenfield will make a presentation on ADL at Boulder High School sometime during the spring.
Barbara Buttenfield is serving as academic advisor to the Blackhawk Middle School's project on GIS and the Internet. George Zack, the Science Education Coordinator at Blackhawk School, has submitted a proposal to U.S. West ``Teaching With Technology'' Program to purchase hardware and training for Blackhawk teachers on Internet and spatial data delivery for classroom use. The concept in the proposal is to teach students to create their own local databases, and georeference their groundtruth with spatial data (maps and satellite images) downloaded from the Internet. If funded, she will identify a graduate student to work with the Blackhawk faculty to develop digital library classroom exercises. ESRI is collaborating on the proposal.
