Discussions on a supplementary project with the Illinois DLI Project in conjunction with University of Arizona were held during a multi-day visit to UCSB by Bruce Schatz, HsinChun Chen, and Paul Kantor in July 1996. The meeting laid the groundwork for a research program in the area of automated metadata extraction that is being supported in terms of supplementary funding by NSF. This funding is leading to tests of ideas concerning the construction of association tables for geographic terms and image textures that may be employed in retrieval of geographic materials from ADL and similar libraries. The additional funding from NSF (see below) is supporting two graduate researchers at UCSB and two researchers at Arizona. Investigators at USCB who will be involved in this project include Larry Carver, Ron Dolin, Linda Hill, Mary Larsgaard, Bangalore Manjunath, and Terry Smith.
