Based on the Gazetteer Content Standard, we designed a relational database schema and implemented the schema on Informix RDBMS. To provide portability, the schema only uses data types supported by almost all RDBMS systems such as Oracle, SQLserver, Sybase and Access. The schema entity relation diagram is available as a PDF files as one large page for view or regular paper size for printing.
We also developed an Alexandria Digital Library Gazetteer Server. The server has an HTML and JavaScript based client interface and a backend supported by an AOL WebServer and Informix Universal RDBMS. The gazetteer service allows users to query the database based on spatial location, feature type, topical text (or assigned terms), and identifier.
