This document is composed of: terms currently used in metadata in the ADL Catalog, with definitions and sources; and an alphabetical list of all terms. Terms are derived from the Dublin Core (http://dublincore.org/documents/dcmi-type-vocabulary/) and the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH; for ordering information, see http://www.loc.gov/cds/), modified and expanded to accord with the current holdings of ADL. As new collections are added, new terms will be added.

I. Terms Currently Used in Metadata in the ADL Catalog

These are the terms, with definitions and sources, currently used for object type. The terms are in alphabetical order.

Aerial photographs

Definition: Remote-sensing images taken by cameras that are mounted most often in airplanes, but may also be carried on other airborne vehicles (e.g., balloons). More generally, any photograph taken from a camera mounted on an airborne platform.

Cartographic works

Definition: A geographic item (excluding remote-sensing images) that represents the whole or a part of the Earth or of any other celestial body. Includes but is not limited to two- and three-dimensional maps and plans, block diagrams, geologic sections, bird’s-eye views, atlases composed of cartographic works, and electronic versions of any of the preceding.

Images from satellites

Definition: Remote-sensing images derived from sensors carried on satellites.

Maps

Definition: a representation, normally to scale, of a selection of material or abstract features on the surface of the Earth or other celestial body.

Remote-sensing images

Definition: Images, of all or a portion of the Earth or other celestial body, that are derived from sensors that measure electromagnetic radiation from the surface being depicted. More broadly, the sensors include any device that is not in direct contact with the surface being sensed, and the surface may be any surface. Includes aerial photographs and images from satellites.
